How to play a MIDI file online

  1. Step 1

    Open a MIDI file

Choose a .mid or .midi file, or drop it on the box. It is read by your browser and never leaves your device.

  2. Step 2

    Press play

Hear the notes with a grand piano sound, or switch to a simple synth. Drag the progress bar to jump to any point.

  3. Step 3

    Watch the piano roll

Every note is a bar: higher notes sit higher, longer notes are longer, and the part already played is shaded.

What is a MIDI file?

A MIDI file (.mid) does not contain recorded sound. It is a list of notes: which key is pressed, when, for how long and how hard. A player or a DAW turns those notes into sound with whatever instrument it chooses, which is why MIDI files are tiny and every note can be edited.

That is also why a phone or a media player often cannot open one: there is no audio inside to play. This page supplies the instrument — a sampled grand piano — so you can hear the notes straight away.

Musicians use MIDI files to share arrangements, learn songs on a keyboard, and move parts between FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro and GarageBand.

Frequently asked questions

Is my MIDI file uploaded?

No. The player reads the file inside your browser and plays it there. It is never sent to our server, so there is no file size quota or daily limit beyond the 2 MB cap for a single file.

Which files can it play?

Standard MIDI files ending in .mid or .midi, up to 2 MB — enough for a long piece with many tracks. Karaoke (.kar) files and other formats are not supported.

Why does it sound different from my DAW or keyboard?

A MIDI file holds notes, not sound, so every player chooses its own instruments. This player plays every track with one piano sound (or a simple synth), which is ideal for checking the notes but does not reproduce drums or the instruments chosen in your DAW.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. It runs in any current mobile browser. On iPhone, if you hear nothing, switch off silent mode — the ring/silent switch also mutes web audio.

How do I turn an MP3 into a MIDI file?

Use the free MP3 to MIDI converter: upload the song or recording, check the notes on the piano roll and download the MIDI file. You can then open it here or in any DAW. For singing or humming, use the voice to MIDI converter.
