How to convert piano audio to MIDI
- Step 1
Upload your piano recording
Choose an MP3, WAV, M4A or the video of your playing — up to 60 MB and 5 minutes (10 minutes when signed in). Or record the piano with your microphone.
- Step 2
Preview the notes
See the detected notes on a piano roll and listen to them before you download anything.
- Step 3
Download the MIDI file
Open it in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, GarageBand or any DAW and edit it like any other MIDI clip.
Piano recording or digital piano?
If you play a digital piano or a keyboard with a USB or MIDI port, you do not need to convert anything: connect it to your computer and record MIDI straight into FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro or GarageBand. Every key you press is captured exactly.
This converter is for everything else — an acoustic piano, a recording you already have, or a video of someone playing. It listens to the sound and writes the notes it hears, which is close but not perfect: listen to the result on the piano roll and fix the odd note in your DAW. To replay a MIDI file later, open it in the online MIDI player.
For a sung or hummed melody, use the voice to MIDI converter; for any other instrument, the audio to MIDI converter.

Does it pick up chords and both hands?
Yes. The converter detects several notes sounding at once, so chords, the left-hand bass and the right-hand melody all become notes. Everything lands on one MIDI track; split the hands in your DAW if you need two.
What about the sustain pedal?
The pedal itself is not written as a pedal event. Notes it keeps ringing appear as longer notes, so the MIDI sounds close to the recording but may need tidying where the pedal blurs a passage.
How should I record my piano for the best result?
Place your phone or microphone close to the piano in a quiet room, without a backing track or singing. A clean recording of the piano alone gives far fewer wrong notes than a song with other instruments.
Can I get piano sheet music from it?
Not directly — the converter writes a MIDI file, not notation. Open the MIDI in free notation software such as MuseScore to see it as sheet music; expect to tidy the rhythm, as with any automatic transcription.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
Yes, it is free and you do not need an account. Each visitor can convert up to 10 files and download 2 MIDI files per day (UTC). Sign in with Google, also free, for 3 downloads a day, files up to 10 minutes and a 7-day history. Previewing on the piano roll does not count as a download.
What happens to the files I upload?
Your audio and the MIDI result are used only to run the conversion and are deleted automatically within 48 hours, or within 8 days for files converted while signed in.
Can it turn a full song into MIDI?
A full mix with drums, bass and vocals only gives a rough draft. Splitting a whole song into one MIDI track per instrument is planned as a separate feature.
How do I open the MIDI file on my phone?
Phones have no built-in app for MIDI files. Open the downloaded file in our online MIDI player to hear it on a piano roll, or import it into GarageBand, FL Studio Mobile or another music app.
