Real before-and-after examples

The converter reads the sound of a video exactly like an audio file. Here are two recordings and the MIDI it produced from them, untouched.

Solo piano

Schubert, Piano Sonata in A minor D 784, II. Andante — first 20 seconds.

Recording: Paul Pitman / Musopen, public domain

Before · original audio

After · MIDI on a piano roll

Guitar solo

A guitar solo in F♯ minor — first 20 seconds.

Recording: Leechfoot, CC0

Before · original audio

After · MIDI on a piano roll

MIDI playback uses piano samples from Salamander Grand Piano by Alexander Holm, licensed under CC BY 3.0.

How to convert MP4 to MIDI

  1. Step 1

    Upload your video

Choose an MP4 or MOV file up to 60 MB and 5 minutes (10 minutes when signed in). Only its sound track is used; the picture is ignored.

  2. Step 2

    Preview the notes

See the detected notes on a piano roll and listen to them before you download anything.

  3. Step 3

    Download the MIDI file

Open it in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, GarageBand or any DAW and edit it like any other MIDI clip.

How a video becomes MIDI

A video file holds two things: the picture and the sound. The converter takes only the sound track, finds the notes in it — pitch, start, length and loudness — and writes them into a MIDI file. The picture is never used, so a phone video of you playing works as well as a studio recording.

The MIDI file contains notes, not sound. Open it in FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro or GarageBand and play it with any instrument, or check it first in the online MIDI player.

Going the other way — turning a MIDI file into a video or an MP4 — means playing the notes with an instrument and recording the screen or the sound; that is a job for a DAW or a screen recorder, not this converter.

Frequently asked questions

My video is larger than 60 MB. What can I do?

Video files are much larger than their sound. Trim the clip to the part you need, or save just the audio as an M4A or MP3 file (most video editors and phones can export audio only), then upload that instead.

Can I paste a YouTube or TikTok link?

No. The converter only reads files you upload; it does not download from links. If you have the video file and the right to use it, upload it here. For audio files, use the audio to MIDI converter.

Which videos give the best MIDI?

Clips where one instrument or voice is clearly heard: a solo piano or guitar performance, a lesson, or you playing in front of your phone. Background music, talking and loud rooms add wrong notes.

Does it work with iPhone videos?

Yes. iPhone videos are saved as MOV, or as MP4 when shared from some apps, and both are accepted.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Yes, it is free and you do not need an account. Each visitor can convert up to 10 files and download 2 MIDI files per day (UTC). Sign in with Google, also free, for 3 downloads a day, files up to 10 minutes and a 7-day history. Previewing on the piano roll does not count as a download.

What happens to the files I upload?

Your audio and the MIDI result are used only to run the conversion and are deleted automatically within 48 hours, or within 8 days for files converted while signed in.

Can it turn a full song into MIDI?

A full mix with drums, bass and vocals only gives a rough draft. Splitting a whole song into one MIDI track per instrument is planned as a separate feature.

How do I open the MIDI file on my phone?

Phones have no built-in app for MIDI files. Open the downloaded file in our online MIDI player to hear it on a piano roll, or import it into GarageBand, FL Studio Mobile or another music app.
