How to convert MIDI to MP3

  1. Step 1

    Open your MIDI file

Choose a .mid or .midi file, or drop it on the box. It is read by your browser and never leaves your device.

  2. Step 2

    Convert to MP3

Press Convert. The notes are played with the instruments set in the file and recorded to audio — faster than real time on most computers.

  3. Step 3

    Listen and download

Check the result in the audio player, then download the MP3. It plays on any phone, computer or media player.

Why a MIDI file needs converting before it plays everywhere

A MIDI file stores notes, not sound. Phones, media players and most apps cannot play it, because they have no instruments to play the notes with. An MP3 is recorded sound, so it plays anywhere.

Converting MIDI to MP3 means playing every note with an instrument and recording the result. This converter uses a General MIDI sound bank, so a song written for piano, strings, bass and drums comes out with all of them. To just listen to a MIDI file without saving anything, open it in the online MIDI player.

Frequently asked questions

What quality is the MP3?

Stereo, 44.1 kHz, 192 kbps — good for listening and sharing. A 3-minute song is about 4 MB. For lossless audio, switch to WAV before converting.

Can I convert a MID file to MP3 on my phone?

Yes, in a current mobile browser. Short songs work best on phones; very long or dense MIDI files take more time and memory than on a computer.

Is my MIDI file uploaded?

No. The MIDI file is played and recorded inside your browser, and the audio file is made on your device. Nothing is sent to our server, so there is no daily limit.

Which instruments does it use?

The 128 instruments and the drum kits of General MIDI, from the GeneralUser GS sound bank. Each track plays with the instrument chosen in the MIDI file — piano, strings, guitar, bass, drums and so on.

Why does it sound different from my DAW?

A MIDI file holds notes, not sound, so every player picks its own instruments. Your DAW may use other sample libraries or plugins; to get exactly that sound, export the audio from the DAW itself.

How long can the MIDI file be?

Up to 10 minutes of music and 2 MB. The first conversion downloads the instruments (about 8 MB); after that they come from your browser cache.

Can I turn an MP3 back into MIDI?

Yes — that is the other direction. Use the MP3 to MIDI converter to get the notes of a recording as an editable MIDI file.
